One-Step Equations

The Hook

Unwrapping the Gift.

What is it?

Finding the value of a variable by performing the inverse (opposite) operation.

Time Travel (History)

The word 'Algebra' comes from 'Al-Jabr', meaning 'The Reunion of Broken Parts'.

Cheat Code

Do the Opposite to BOTH sides.

Practice This Now!

The Field Guide

In Plain English: The variable x is annoying. It wants to be alone. If a number is clinging to it, you have to force it away. If the number is Adding, you Subtract. If it is Multiplying, you Divide.

In The Real World: Budgeting. 'I have $50 total, I spent $20, what did I start with?' (x - 20 = 50).

How To Do It

  1. Locate the variable (x).
  2. Identify what is happening to it (e.g., + 5).
  3. Perform the Inverse Operation (- 5).
  4. Do it to BOTH sides of the equals sign.
  5. Solve.

Booby Trap!

Not doing it to both sides. Equations are a balance scale. If you take weight off the left, you MUST take it off the right or it tips over.

Real World Challenge
"A number plus 7 equals 10. Find the number."
The Logic: x + 7 = 10. Opposite of +7 is -7. 10 - 7 = 3. So x = 3.

Training Drills

Inverse Add
x + 4 = 12 -4 -4 ---------- x = 8
Subtract to undo add.
Inverse Mult
3x = 12 /3 /3 x = 4
Divide to undo multiply.
