Simplifying Fractions

The Hook

Making life easier.

What is it?

Reducing a fraction to its smallest terms (e.g., 4/8 -> 1/2).

Time Travel (History)

Mathematicians value elegance. The simplest answer is usually the best answer.

Cheat Code

Divide top and bottom by the Greatest Common Factor.

Practice This Now!

The Field Guide

In Plain English: Imagine a pizza cut into 8 slices. If you eat 4 slices, you ate 4/8 of the pizza. But it's easier to just say you ate 'half' (1/2). Simplifying makes numbers smaller and easier to handle without changing the amount.

In The Real World: Woodworking instructions. They won't say 'cut 2/4 of an inch.' They say '1/2 inch.'

How To Do It

  1. Find a number that divides evenly into both the Top and Bottom.
  2. Divide both.
  3. Check if you can divide again.
  4. Stop when the only number that works is 1.

Booby Trap!

Dividing the top number but forgetting to divide the bottom number. You must treat them equally!

Real World Challenge
"You got 20 out of 25 questions right on a test. What is the simplified fraction?"
The Logic: 20/25. Both divide by 5. 20÷5=4. 25÷5=5. Answer: 4/5.

Training Drills

The Pizza
4/8 -> divide by 4 -> 1/2
4 slices is half a pie.
Step by Step
12/18 -> divide by 2 -> 6/9 6/9 -> divide by 3 -> 2/3
You can take multiple steps.
