Remainders

The Hook

The leftovers.

What is it?

What is left over when a number doesn't divide evenly.

Time Travel (History)

Modular arithmetic is entirely based on remainders.

Cheat Code

The remainder must always be smaller than the divisor.

The Field Guide

In Plain English: Sometimes things don't fit perfectly. If you have 5 candies and 2 friends, each gets 2, and 1 is left over. That '1' is the remainder.

In The Real World: Packing cars for a trip. 13 people, 4 seats per car. You need 4 cars (3 full, 1 with just 1 person).

Booby Trap!

Writing 'R5' if you are dividing by 4. If remainder > divisor, you did it wrong!

Real World Challenge
"13 eggs. A carton holds 12. How many are loose?"
The Logic: 13 ÷ 12 = 1 carton with 1 egg remaining.

Training Drills

R Notation
7 ÷ 2 = 3 R1
3 groups of 2, 1 left.
Fraction
7 ÷ 2 = 3 1/2
Remainder becomes numerator.
