Logarithms

The Hook

The undo button for exponents.

What is it?

The inverse function to exponentiation. log_b(x) asks 'b to what power equals x?'

Time Travel (History)

Invented by John Napier in 1614 to help sailors perform massive multiplication problems by turning them into addition.

Cheat Code

Log of a Product = Sum of Logs. Log(ab) = Log(a) + Log(b).

Practice This Now!

The Field Guide

In Plain English: A log is just a question: 'How many times do I multiply this number to get that number?' Log-base-10 of 1000 is 3, because 10x10x10 is 1000. It measures magnitude, not just quantity.

In The Real World: Earthquakes. The Richter Scale is logarithmic. A 6.0 is 10 times stronger than a 5.0, not just a little bit stronger.

How To Do It

  1. Isolate the Log term.
  2. Rewrite in Exponential form: Base^Answer = Input.
  3. Solve for x.

Booby Trap!

Confusing the Base and the Argument. Remember the 'Snail' motion: Base to the Answer equals the Middle.

Real World Challenge
"A bacteria colony doubles every hour (Base 2). You start with 1. How long until you have 1000?"
The Logic: 2^x = 1000. Rewrite as log2(1000) = x. Using a calculator, x is approx 9.96 hours.

Training Drills

Conversion
log_2(8) = 3 <--> 2^3 = 8
Base stays the Base.
